Established in 1778, Rockingham County lies in the west-central edge of Virginia on the West Virginia border.The county is bounded by both the Allegheny Mountains on the west and the Blue Ridge Mountains on the east. The third largest county in Virginia, Rockingham contains 7 incorporated towns within 5 districts. Bridgewater, Dayton, and Mt. Crawford are included in the Ashby District. The towns of Elkton and Grottoes make up the Stonewall District. Lastly, Timberville and Broadway are located in the Plains District. The county seat, Harrisonburg is an independent city.
